Sustainability

What is sustainability?

The ongoing process of enriching the environment, the community, and the economy. To enrich the environment means both correcting past environmental mistakes and preventing new damage from occurring. A citizen of an enriched community is civically active, politically engaged, socially responsible, and personally healthy. A sustainable economy encourages new kinds of development without depleting natural or human resources, and deemphasizes the value placed on consumption. True sustainability requires enrichment of all three of these.

Why is sustainability important to me?

Among the hundreds of reasons why sustainability is crucial at the individual level, here are four examples:

  • Locally produced, unprocessed, untreated food is better for your body.
  • An engaged community is a safer community.
  • Supporting local businesses makes you less car dependent, saving you money.
  • A cleaner environment has the potential to reduce the prevalence of personal health issues, such as childhood asthma, and certain cancers.
